James Calvin, the novel

In the calm port of Les Hattes, a legend was born. But nobody knew it at the time. To them, he was a little seven year old boy in trouble and mischief like all children. Then, in the summer of 1708, a fisherman noticed a strange sight coming from a clump of trees. A small wooden boat sailed out, and at the tiller was none other than Bryan Cook. He was that young boy, His full name being Bryan James Cook. A name that would eventually strike fear into the enemies of Britain. But this didn’t happen yet, so anyways back to the boat. He sailed out in his makeshift frigate, and as he passed the Les Hattes docks he screamed to the people “I’m a go kill me some pirates!” They laughed at this foolish boy, he was completely crazy. But something then happened that would become a legend passed through the generations of Les Hattes citizens. The fastest fisherman in the area, Captain “Speedy” Jacobs, challenged this adventurous child to a race. His ship took off, racing at a speed unheard of, with Bryan still struggling to turn around the race. His boat almost capsized on the turn, the townspeople anxiously awaited it to turn. It was almost flipped now. The edge was in the water, it was going to flip. Still the townsfolk stood quietly intently watching the boy. And then….. He pulled hard on the mainsheet, brought his sail in, and he was fine. Now he was facing the correct direction and was off. Captain Jacobs relaxed in his boat enjoying what he thought was a victory. But the longer it went on, the more he realized, this boy was catching up. The entire town cheered for 8 year old Bryan as he passed Captain Jacobs, who was now scrambling to get more speed out of his sails. But he was no match for Endeavor, the name of Bryan’s handmade boat.
He was a boy of legend in his home port, and the nearby Captain Virgil Kyle of His Majesties St. George Squadron saw this whole vent unfold. He was tasked by his superiors to help the boy and watch over him. Eventually, when Bryan was 15 in the year 1715 he was given a 6 gun ‘La Belle’ Class Corvette. He earned fame locally for his successful raids on Drakesmen Pirates outside Jenny Bay. He would sail a “Dolphyn’ Class Ketch, and eventually a ‘Cureiuse’ Class Snow in his efforts to remove piracy from the Guyana region. After rising fame in the British Navy he was reassigned to The Kings Fleet, a prestigious group that sailed the largest ships in the Caribbean. The Largest this fleet ever became was 1 ‘Prince’ Class 1st rate ship of the line (106 guns), 4 ‘Triumphant’ Class 2nd rates (86 guns), 1 ‘Trinity’ Class 2nd rate (96 guns), 1 ‘Valiant’ Class 3rd rate (66 guns) that would be captained by our very famous Bryan Cook, and 2 ‘Couronne’ Class Galleons (72 guns). At the time he joined he was Captain of a 16 gun ‘Lexington’ class brig and quickly rising through the ranks. He sailed numerous frigates, before becoming Captain of and ‘Alexander’ Class fourth Rate, 58 guns. The Kings Fleet would lead many raids against Temperance Ships near Bridgetown trying to protect the Rum industry for England. But eventually the Fleet would need to sail for England again, and since Bryan did not wish to sail to Europe he asked to be transferred to the illustrious St. George Squadron of the White, under command of Lord Fletcher, Vice Admiral of the Squadron of St George. His old friend Captain Virgil Kyle was still a member of the Squadron, and they both commanded ‘Valiant’ Class 3rd rates. But his service to the Squadron would be short lived, he would be unhappy with the politics of the British Navy and Government intervention on his many missions.

Part 2 out of a lot. Writing it when i get the chance, and its coming along great. I think it will get better as time goes on.

One day, Captain Bryan Cook was called into the office of Lord Fletcher himself. Bryan was unsure of the meaning of this visit, and was uncertain what would happen since he recently had trouble with another Captain of the Squadron. But it was all good news, Lord Fletcher asked him to take a seat, and discussed how he would be in command of a ‘Trinity’ Class 2nd rate in the next couple of months. He was to sail to Turtling Bay to await the construction of his new ship. But, when he got to the port, construction had not even begun. The owner of the shipyard tasked with the construction of his ship never even heard he was supposed to build one. Angry, Bryan sent a letter to Lord Fletcher informing him of the situation. The reply angered him even more, Lord Fletcher claimed no order was placed and he was not to receive a newly commissioned 2nd rate.
Bryan stood on the quarterdeck of his ship. “Crew and officers of His Majesties Ship Endeavor, I have grave news. The promised ship we were sailing here to take command of is not, and will never be built. The British Admiralty has failed us once again.”
Angered cries arose from the men of the ship, knowing the hard times they had already received from the tea-drinking government appointed Admirals that ran the navy. Deeply upset, they plotted to sail out of the harbor that night and escape with a prize of their 66 gun ship, becoming pirates. Captain Cook planned the whole thing, raising anchor when the sun went down and sailing quietly out as soon as they could. The crew was all for it, and preparations were made. Supplies were taken on for the rest of the day, with the excuse of special orders to sail at once. The plan was to sail north for the pirate stronghold of Santa Clara, and then take on full supplies for sailing to Tortuga to speak with Kidd himself.
As the sun set, the Captain and his handpicked crew he sent ashore with him, were returning to the longboat to return to the ship. The Captain counted to make sure he got everyone, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8…. Where is number 9? He recalled take 2 Officers, 7 crewmen, and then his coxswain that stayed at the boat. He was missing one of the officers, a midshipman who worshipped the British Flag and the King. Suddenly he saw a small boy run out to a small rowboat, hop in, and sail for the nearby naval headquarters. The lighthouse made a few signals, and before they could launch the longboat three Frigates appeared around the tip of the bay, guns run out and decks cleared for action.
“Quick,” Captain Cook said to his remaining men, “to that alley!”
They ran for the alley as a British detachment of soldiers came running down the street. They could hear shouts coming from the ships in the bay; the frigates had boarded the Endeavor. The men ducked into the back room of the tavern and switched into civilian clothes, Captain Cook covering his eye with an eye patch to cover his face a little. The soldiers were searching everywhere, but the men hid well in the crowd of the people. The entrances and exits to the town were guarded, and the entire garrison in the port had been alerted. Every ship in the harbor was checked, and a blockade was set outside port. A nearby detachment of the St. George Squadron was to come and take away the Endeavor in the next month.
But now Captain Cook and the remaining men of his crew were stuck, and hundreds of other Endeavor crew members sentenced to hang. They had to act fast, or they would be next in line for the hangman’s noose.

The Endeavor was taken by the detachment of St. George Squadron to the island of Nassau. The mutinous crew was kept as prisoners, to be hung in the island paradise. Captain Cook and his remaining men vowed to save their doomed comrades, and stowed away on a merchant ship that would arrived in Nassau. All they could do is wait. Day after day passed before the ship arrived in port and they anxiously awaited the date for execution. Finally a date was set, 4 days from when the notice went out. They thought up plan after plan, but everyone had a fatal flaw. Hours passed of this tedious work, and still no progress. A large fleet of British ships were anchored in the harbor. Three days to go. There were preparations all over town, hundreds of soldiers. 2 days to go.
Then a miracle happened, a Spanish fleet was sighted. The British fleet sailed out of the harbor, with the Endeavour apparently making preparations as well. Bryan and his crew ran for a fishing boat docked near the land. An Officer stopped them, and asked them what their business was. “Fishing,” Cook said, “We must fish or we will starve.” The officer asked for Bryan’s name. “James Calvin, at your service, sir.” He replied.
“Very well” the officer replied, “off you go just beware the battle to happen outside.”
They got in the boat and set off for the only anchored ship in the harbor. The preparations on deck allowed them to sail undetected next to the ship. Sneaking through the bottom gun ports, they made their way to the brig. It was easy to get past the guards, they just told them the prisoners were to come on deck. But it was not the case, the prisoners ran for the weapons! They grabbed sword, pistols, and muskets, anything they could use as weapons.
The new captain of Endeavour stood on the quarterdeck watching the preparations. Everything was going well, and they might be able to participate in the upcoming battle. He could just barely see the Spanish fleet, and the British fleet going to engage. The first shots were fired, BOOM, BOOM, BOOM, they went off, and the battle had begun. The men looked up from their work momentarily to see what had happened. Then they heard screams… but from their own ship. Then, all of a sudden, the prisoners ran out onto the deck swords and guns everywhere! The captain called to action but the pirates were already on top of them. Captain Cook appeared behind the new captain.
“Good day, sir, now my ship please?”
“Go to hell, traitor to England!”
“Poor choice of last words, and now OFF MY SHIP!!”
He shot once, killing the captain instantly. “The ship is ours!” he exclaimed! The remaining British crew was tossed overboard, and they raised anchor preparing to set sail.
“Captain Cook, sir, we are all ready.” His first mate said.
“Call me Captain Calvin, James Calvin. And very good, let’s get out of here.” Replied Bryan.
They would set sail for Tortuga, then to Ruddy to meet with the notorious pirate gang known as Rackem’s Raiders where his old friend from the Kings Fleet, James Richter (now Kings Terror) called home after his fight with the British Admiralty. He would go on to many other adventures, but he was a pirate now free from the binds of the navy. And he was happy, free to sail the seven seas pillaging and plundering every one of them.
“Yarg!! A Pirates Life for me!”

Combat off the Coast of Grenville
The famous port of Grenville, jewel of France’s Florida ports, witnessed an act of piracy the other day none of the residents will soon forget.
This tale begins at the helm of a 58 gun Refit Fourth Rate, where the notorious Captain James Calvin stood. Disappointed at his recent failure to take over an ‘Invincible’ class first rate, he prowled the seas hunting for other grand prizes. The entire ship’s morale was low after the loss, but despite the failure the crew still trusted their captain and wished to remain with him. The deck wasn’t very busy, mostly men just lying in the Caribbean sun relaxing. Everything was calm and peaceful for as far as they could see. Then suddenly, a loud voice shattered the silence.
“Sail ho!”
The Captain awoke from his daydreaming, and so did the first mate who was taking a nap on the poop deck. The calm deck suddenly burst into men running everywhere, completing all their duties they neglected while they relax in the warm sun.
“Looks big, Captain, possibly a ship of the line!”
Could this be the big prize he was looking for? He ordered the men to clear for action, and every sail was set. James headed up to the top of the mainmast to see for himself what this sail was. He could see a French Flag, a common variation of the French flag found in this area, and a very decorative stern. After admiring this type of ship since he was a boy he was certain it was a ‘Prince’ Class 1st rate ship of the line.
“Full sail! Put every sail we got out! Prepare for action!”
Captain Calvin was excited, and when he got excited about something his crew knew something good was going to happen. He went into his cabin and put on his very best coat and grabbed his best sword. He hurried on deck, and the first mate was standing on the quarter deck looking very, very scared.
“What’s wrong?” James asked.
“Look, there are four other French ships with the rate.”
Now James was worried also. He knew he would go in there no matter what after the prize, but after his recent loss and other failed maneuvers like this he was unsure whether his crew would do the same. He now had to make a decision on what he would do, would he go in after the prize into near certain death or avoid the French fleet and let his glorious prize escape?

Macer is really good too, back when i was a avarage player he could almost 2 shot my cap mc in his Intrepid just from stern camping.
But now i believe i can beat his ass.

Ok here is part 2 of my attack on a French First Rate.

The First mate looked at the Captain. He noticed the Captain’s troubled look in his face. It was as if a storm had hit his facial features. He had never seen his Captain this troubled before, and it worried him. The worry and feared seemed to float down from the quarterdeck down to the deepest hold of the ship, affecting every crew member. The men stared up, eagerly awaiting the Captain’s orders. The deck was tense awaiting the word of what they were going to do. All eyes were on the battle-hardened Captain. Everything seemed to freeze; they were even unaware of the roll of the sea that calmed the crew on the way to battle.
Then Captain James Calvin pulled out a bottle of good Tortuga Rum, took a drink, and ordered, “FULL SAIL AHEAD!!”
A huge uproar sounded from the deck, the crew later swore it could be heard all the way back in France. The guns were loaded and cutlasses were brought out on deck. Frenzy broke out on deck as the ship prepared for a massive battle. As they approached the monster ship, James took out his gleaming cutlass and waved it above his head rallying the crew to the deadly task ahead. The skull and crossbones were run up high on the mainmast, and the infamous Rackem’s Raider flag flying from the Stern. The racing black hull of Calvin’s ship and black sails would have made even the most veteran crews cringe. For the monster’s inexperienced crew it just about broke them right there. Some jumped overboard, others started throwing crates of supplies overboard. The captain of the French ship (later learned) just returned from a few months on land and was unprepared for the attack. Despite the chaos, the French flag still flew proudly from the mainmast and stern much to the disappointment of the advancing pirates.
They passed the Monster’s broadside. It fired. And even though 50 guns just poured hundreds of pounds of iron into the hull of James’ ship it appeared unscathed, the crew still rallied and unhurt. James returned the shot with raking the French deck, killing hundreds of unlucky crew that were in the open. The grappling hooks were thrown, and the pirates flooded on board. The French quickly surrendered and struck their colors. Having mercy, James sent the French crew away on the longboat. Well, if you could call it mercy since the longboat was full of holes and sharks were beginning to appear with the blood in the water.
The next day the people of Grenville saw their prized 1st rate sailing into the harbor, the French flag flying proud over it. Then out of nowhere it fell, and the Jolly Roger was raised, and all hundred guns fired echoing around the peaceful town. The Magistrate ran out, and after looking through his spyglass he muttered under his breath:
“Damn that James Calvin!”
