The Life and Times of Heda Maiden Empty The Life and Times of Heda Maiden

I'm not sure when I was taken by that man... it seems I have always been with him.

I don't have any memory of my mother, though I have been told she came from the Emerald Isle's of Ireland, the cold unrelenting lands of Norway, and even from the exotic desert people of Egypt. The only thing that is ever consistent with the stories of my mother is that she was kidnapped with me when I was roughly 4 years old. They wanted to toss me to the sharks but my mother pleaded for my life in exchange for hers. The telling gets a little fuzzy again. But in the end I was sold into slavery to a crazy Dutch man and his wife.

The man and his wife were Henning and Aphria Van der Berg. Henning was a twisted man who enjoyed bringing misery to his wife. Aphria did her best to protect me from Henning but it was an impossible effort. Aphria was allowed by Henning to give me a name and she named me Heda Maiden after her great aunt from the highlands of Scotland. Never being able to have children of her own, she did her best to make a lady of me, but told me to always live up to my name for it is who I am. My name, I found out years later, meant fighting battle maiden. Boy if ever a name suited someone...

Anyway, I was forced to do unspeakable things and Henning always had me at his side whenever he left on business, for his pleasure as well as his friends and business partners. We made it home to Aphria maybe 3 or 4 times a year.

One day, not long after I had turned 11, we went back home to find that Aphria had "aquired" another slave. A 16 year old boy named William. She thought that Henning might be able to use him while traveling for running errands or even as a strong arm, as he was more squirrely than he looked. Henning was not too interested and punished his wife for buying him without his approval, but in the end decided he may come in useful after all. Aphria just wanted someone to look out for me. I didn't think William really gave a damn.

When we set out for our next trip, things went as usual. I was used as necessary by whoever and left alone for a few hours. William would bring me bread and water and leave, going about whatever business Henning had set him. This went on for a few days, when Henning got very upset and beat William almost to death. Apparently a colleague of his had come to a very untimely death and took out his anger on William. No one ever found out what actually happened, but one by one over the next few months, his friends and colleagues started dying off in very suspicious ways. Everytime another died, Henning beat William. The down side is I paid for it as well, but I had learned long ago to ignore pain and emotions.

Henning had very few friends left when we headed torward home. His business was failing as a result of all the people dying around him and he was becoming increasingly desperate. That was when Henning snapped.

He killed the ship captain in his sleep and most of his crew in one nite. He kept me in the captains cabin with the dead captain and took William to what remained of the deckhands to sail the ship to God knew where. Henning had become a pirate. For almost a year, Henning raided, looted, pillaged, and raped his way all the way to the Carribean, where he decided he would become the most feared pirate any had ever known. But William it turns out had other plans.

Our first nite in Tortuga, William came into the room that Henning and I shared, while we were sleeping. He gently put his hand over my mouth and indicated that I should quietly move and not say anything. I did as he told and William cut Hennings head off with his own cutlass while he was asleep.

Since then, William got a new name when he became the new captain of Hennings ship. The crew had given him the name becuz he could not abide the wet moldy bread, fruit or watered down rum aboard the ship. They would joke how he must have been so spoiled as a lad that he even wanted his water dry. Hence Captain Dry Water.

We roamed the seas doing the only thing we knew how to do which was pirating. Dry Water started making a name for himself when men started dying for even looking at me with lust let alone talking shameful to me or in my presence. And while both have us have healed somewhat over our ordeal and less people were dying, we caught the attention of a Captain Violet Ho who thought we would make a great addition to the Bretheren and to them locally, a society called Rackem's Raiders. Violet and the leader of Rackem's Raiders, Bridog Rackem, along with all their members, have been the guidance we had never had growing up and have helped us become the fine pirates you all know and love today.

Just be careful though, if your talking to Heda inappropriately... Dry Water probably saw it...
