Violet Ho never had a childhood and Violet Davenport never lived past 15, but this is not the tale of two women. Violet Davenport was born to a poor family of several children, the youngest of 8 in fact. With the family on the brink of starvation she was sold to a brothel at age 7, there she cleaned clothes, scrubbed floors and showed “guests” to their rooms. She was well liked by the women and suitors alike, being revered as the most beautiful in the brothel. Some years later as she became a woman, her days of scrubbing floors came to an end and instead of making beds she was now in them. She did not mind, as she gave the full company experience and was paid well to listen to and love her companions. She enjoyed hearing of the adventures and looked forward to each return visit, until one day a gentleman came to call, asked for her by name. She took him to her room but shortly after their start he became physical, violent even, throwing her around the room like a rag doll. He pulled a knife on her, intent to make himself her last. She clutched the nearest thing she could find, a piece of glass from a freshly destroyed mirror. As she fought him off he took several deep gashes to the body and face. She being smaller and flexible received only one, a deep laceration to the eye. The fight was over as fast as it had began and the gentleman was escorted off the premises, given a full refund and sent on his merry way. She on the other hand was given a severe whipping and a crude bandage over her now loose eye. That night she heard the brothel mistress talking to an unknown man, which she assumed was the owner of the establishment, about how Violet was now worthless and how no one would want to take a romp with a cut up whore. That night she quickly packed what little she had acquired in a bag, including a pair of blades tucked away in the back of her belt and snuck out the window, making for the docks. She stole away on the first ship she could find, slipping past the guards effortlessly.
She could hear the bustle outside the door as the men scurried around over the next few days, she had discovered she had stowed away in a storage locker aboard a pirate ship as the colors soared high. Days went by with no disturbance until one day she heard a booming voice say “Break out the stores, what we got in that locker!!”
Her heartbeat quickened and she grew instantly cold. Not this locker, she hoped. As the door swung open and the sun was blotched out of the doorway by a burly man. He stood for a second surveying his surroundings before him. “Johnson, Worthinson get over here,” as they approached, “You men were responsible for this locker, something is amiss in here, figure it out.”
She sunk into the corner, hiding in the shadow. She watched their approach as they slowly moved into the room, swords drawn. She slipped her daggers out of the belt and thought, take out the two then the big one before he can ring the alarm…no that wouldn’t work…. Take the big one hostage and barter for a boat….ok, that’s a maybe. I do have surprise on my side. As the first came within range she reacted, bolting out of the corner, slicing across his chest and dropping, first dagger into his shoe as the second flew true to his groin. She launched herself at the second. As he turned on her, she dug the daggers into his chest and fell to the ground with him. She raised the dagger for the final strike when suddenly she was yanked off of him! She went flying to the doorway, landing in a heap. She reached over to grab her dagger, but realized she was moving… She bumped up the stairs, smacking each one in turn, hard, sliding around the floor until she found herself being pulled out of the sun and into another room. Unexpectedly she stopped, then was tossed across the room smacking against the wall then falling forward and rolling into a heap. “Now what was all that about back there!! You killed two of my men. Lucky for you I didn’t like them anyways. No good bilge rats, the lot of them, but you… You how did you get aboard my ship lass and gimmie one good reason why I shouldn’t throw you to the crew?”
Quickly she recounted her experiences and her life story to that point, hoping that she could move this mountain of a man with her story, pleading anything and everything to save herself, then for a quick death as reality set in. “Well now that’s quite a story there, now let me tell ya, my name is Tobackee Ho and I’m a business man. Everything on this ship is mine, everyone and everything, that now includes you. However I gots a proposition for ya, you sail under me flag, serve me well for two years, one for each of the men you slaughtered and I’ll set ya a shore any where in the Caribbean.”
Quickly she agreed and worked her way up the ranks as a trusted member of the crew, becoming the most vicious, most loyal and most beautiful of his crew. As her two years came to a close, she found herself hesitant to leave, becoming sidetracked and distracted while in the heat of battle, she had become attached to the Captain and she knew the attraction was mutual. Often he had called her to his cabin, simply to chat or discuss options. Days later the solution came to her while boarding a rival merchant ship, the ship was won, new to the fleet of course, but the battle would take place in the Captains Quarters, her turn for a proposal.
“Marry you? Are you daft woman?”
“Think of it more as a business proposition, you marry me, I sail that ship under your colors and your business doubles, what do you say?”
“But marry you? I can’t argue the proposition is intriguing, and don’t get me wrong you are a fine woman, fine indeed, but I’ma not the marring kind.”
The next day they were married, and as he carried her up the stairs to his cabin, she never felt so comfortable in his arms, as they entered the cabin with the crew cheering on the main deck she felt like she belonged. And later that night, when she fell out of his hammock she smacked her face again. She lost her sight and knew that Tobackee Ho would get his title back.
